Dominic Restuccia Releases Public Safety Plan to Support Law Enforcement and Ensure Safe Communities
“If we are going to make Michigan the best place to live, work, and raise a family, the first step is making our communities safe.”
HOWELL, MI — Dominic Restuccia announced today his Public Safety Plan to Support Law Enforcement and Ensure Safe Communities.
“As the son of a Detroit prosecutor, I was raised to be grateful to the heroes who patrol our streets at great personal risk and sacrifice. Our law enforcement officials have faced demonization, contempt, and abuse which has undermined their ability to do their jobs and keep our communities safe,” Restuccia said.
It has also made it more difficult to recruit and retain much needed law enforcement officials. The number of police officers in Michigan has fallen from 23,000 in 2001 to 18,500 at the end of 2023, almost a 20% decline. In just the last three years, the state lost close to 900 officers. The result is that Michigan has 4 of the top 20 most dangerous cities in America – Detroit, Saginaw, Kalamazoo, and Lansing.
“This is unacceptable,” Restuccia stated. “We need elected officials who support our law enforcement and ensure that our police officers have the resources needed to serve and protect our communities.”
As your state representative, Restuccia is committed to advocate for legislation that provides steadfast support for our selfless police officers and cracks down on criminal conduct, while also treating victims of crime the way we ourselves would want to be treated:
- Increase mandatory minimums for assaulting, injuring, or killing a police officer
- Improve officer benefits related to workers’ compensation and health insurance
- Provide state support for additional instructional support, work-study programs, and recruitment marketing
- Enhance penalties and create mandatory minimums for violent rioting, including riots which cause damage to public property or intentionally obstruct and endanger drivers
- Create mandatory minimums for sexual assault
- Ensure that local governments and law enforcement agencies do not adopt policies that discourage the enforcement of any state, local, or municipal laws
