Dominic Restuccia Statement on Illegal Immigration

HOWELL, MI — Dominic Restuccia today published his proposal to address illegal immigration in Michigan.

“The crisis at our borders is devastating families and communities right here in Michigan. A young woman in Grand Rapids, Ruby Garcia, was recently murdered by an illegal immigrant who had previously been deported and re-entered the country. While nothing we do will restore the tragic loss of Ruby’s life, Michigan’s government  must act to protect Michigan residents. Until and unless our government returns to the rule of law and restores law and order, we are at risk of further violence and crime,” Restuccia said.

Ruby Garcia is not the first victim of illegal immigration. University of Georgia student Laken Riley was killed by an illegal immigrant while out for a jog in February.

“As a former national security advisor to Senator Mike Lee of Utah and Congressman Mike Bishop of Michigan, I worked alongside the Trump administration on public policy to secure our country against drug cartels, foreign adversaries, and transnational criminal organizations that seek to exploit our unsecured borders and place American citizens lives at risk,” Restuccia said.

The border security crisis has recently reached unprecedented levels. Last December alone there were over 300,000 illegal crossings—averaging nearly 10,000 people per day. The border security crisis has fueled the fentanyl epidemic as well with drug cartels bringing fentanyl across the border. Fentanyl deaths reached a record high in 2023 as fatal overdoses peaked above 112,000 deaths. Drug overdoses are a leading cause of death among young Americans age 18-45 and it is killing over 3,000 Michigan residents a year.

Restuccia unveiled the following policy proposals for Michigan as part of his campaign platform:

• Ban sanctuary cities and counties in Michigan. Cities and counties should not be allowed to prevent local law enforcement from communicating and cooperating with federal law enforcement when they’ve apprehended an illegal immigrant.
• Provide state and local law enforcement the training, additional resources, and legal authority to coordinate with federal ICE officials to detain and deport criminal illegal immigrants.
• Restrict Governor Whitmer’s use of taxpayer funding to house, transport, or subsidize illegal immigrants coming to Michigan. The only use of taxpayer funds for illegal immigrant transportation should be for removal from the state.
• Prohibit the Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson from providing driver’s licenses or absentee ballot applications to illegal immigrants.
• Eliminate the $4 million relocation program that is being used to relocate illegal immigrants to Michigan.
• Increase penalties for fentanyl dealers and traffickers.

“These are common sense policy reforms to make Michigan safe from drugs, crime, and fraud,” Restuccia said. “If we are going to make Michigan the best place to live, work, and raise a family and start bringing people back to the state, the first step is making our communities safe.”

Dominic is running for Michigan’s 50th State House District which includes Howell, Fowlerville, and Hartland. Dominic and his wife, Emma, live in the City of Howell with their two daughters, Leona and Edith.
